A case study in Identity Crisis ......
...... solved by Fingerprint Biometric solution.
It is no surprise that the average office worker has a few passwords to remember - in order to enter the office main door,
to log into the workstation and then another to the computer network,
to access online applications or services over the corporation computer systems and over the Internet.
The average number of passwords can be ten or more for an information technology officer handling computer network and various systems.
To make matter worse, all passwords are supposed to be different to stay resilient in the event that their passwords are no longer secret.
When a user forgets the password, there would be productivity lost as the user could not log into his/her workstation.
The user might call the IT administrator or the help desk. If the administrator is busy,
much time is lost waiting for the password to be reset. This productivity lost and inefficiency cost companies money.
A local defence organisation has began using biometric systems to replace the password-based systems that control access rights
to everything from equipments data to battlefield planning and execution centres.
It has adopted the storage of digital images of officers' fingerprints in a networked environment on database.
Using and safe-keeping of computer passwords are things of the past.
Traditionally, hackers mount attacks on computer networking systems by trying to determine randomly generated passwords.
With the biometric identification logon system in place, it would defeat assault from hackers on sensitive defence networking systems.
Secondly, operations would not be disrupted by forgetting of passwords (as some applications are not activated in daily or routine manner).
After implementation, security breach caused by user writing his user-ids and passwords on piece of papers and putting them on the work-desk,
underneath the keyboard, sticking on workstation has been eliminated. Cost-cutting in administrating password relating to re-set and re-issue
forgotten passwords has seen an overwhelming result.
As of now, the fingerprint biometric solution has served the organisation's need.
More and more corporations, both large or small will find this a very practical and effective solution to take up.
